The time has come, you’re finally about to go to college. You may or may not have spoken to your roommate but i’m sure you’ve picked out your bedding and gathered pictures/posters to cover the drab walls of your dorm room. If you’ve been reading my blog posts you’re hopefully brining you’re favorite childhood stuffed animal to keep you company during those not so picture perfect moments.
Now that you’ve got all of your “stuff” picked out, packed or shipped it’s time to start thinking about the “extras”. At sleep away camp I was always the kid with a sick candy stash so it was no surprise to anyone who knows me well that I had a food stash in my dorm room. It kept me fed, healthy and I was able to avoid many unwanted trips to the dining hall. I’ve compiled a dorm room food shopping list for all of you. While some of the items may seem interesting like...egg whites!! LOL I’ve explained it all in previous blog posts. If there is something you think I missed, would like me to add or have questions about just DM me on Instagram @sophieinthecity_ and i’ll get back to you all ASAP! XOX, Sophie Paige

I’m honestly not quite sure where I heard this, or if I made it up but it’s something I truly believe. As we all move out of our childhood homes for the first time, and start doing “real world things” on our own it’s normal to find yourself feeling overwhelmed and alone, I certainly did. My family was 3,000 miles away and in a different time zone. While there were physically people around me 24/7, it wasn’t the same as having “my people”.
It took me a little while to find my people, but once I did I knew they were totally worth the wait. I could go on to tell you all about how sorority recruitment didn’t go my way, and how I felt like my world was ending but we’ll get there in time. Once I found my people I knew I found my home away from home. I found my late night study buddies, shoulders to cry on, Netflix binge buddies, personal makeup artist, siSDTers to bring me pants when mine ripped, homework when I forgot it in my room and so much more. The friendships I’ve made are more valuable to me than I can put into worlds. I found “my people” and let me tell you, I would do anything for them and they feel the same. Some nights it was staying up late chatting about silly things, others it was working through tough situations or break ups and some nights it was staying up until 4:30am helping each other edit assignments. While I was the only one with 8am classes, those days usually ended up with me running on caffeine. My roommates came home from class to find me passed out on the couch at 4pm…and guess what?! I wouldn’t trade those days for anything. I found my people who could turn my frown upside down, stay with me through thick and thin, study with me for my exams as hard as they study for their own and most importantly, love me like their family. So, to all of my people out there who are nervous or apprehensive just know, you will find your people. College isn’t meant to be a solo journey, we have roommates and floor communities for a reason. Wether your roommate/floor community is or isn’t your cup of tea just remember your people are out there. You all chose to go to that given school for a reason, there is something that binds you all. Some of us just take longer to find our people than others and that’s ok. Don’t compare someones highlight reel to your behind the scenes, nothing is as good as it looks. Sending you all love and good health🤗🤍✨ XOX, Sophie Paige I like to think of myself as a "half adult", you know i'm an adult when it comes to choosing what groceries to buy and what to make for dinner but when it comes to "real world" stuff I DEFINITELY need help from my parents.
When I was younger I always wanted to be a "Dult", I guess the "A" got dropped at somewhere along the way, but now that I'm about to start my junior year of college I would like to hit pause and go back to the days of plastic high heels and running around in my princess dresses. I’m not saying I don’t love where I am in life but there’s no guidebook and now that I have to do “real world stuff” COVID-19 edition...let’s just say I’m stressed. If you’re anything like me, I signed a lease to live with my friends this year in an apartment (thank g it’s fully furnished, phew) but now I have absolutely no idea what i’m doing. There are TONS of things I not only hadn’t thought of but a lot of things that wouldn't have even crossed my mind. Could you imagine moving into an apartment, going to the bathroom and then realizing you DON’T HAVE TOILET PAPER?! It’s enough when you go to a public bathroom and forget to check for it first, but to do it to yourself in your own apartment?! AWFUL! To help you (and myself) avoid incidents like this I've compiled a list of the essentials. This is for anyone moving into an apartment, house, etc. If you find it helpful or realized I forgot something, help a girl out and please LMK!! Good Luck to all of you and STAY HEALTHY!! XOX, Sophie Paige Hello & Welcome!! It's 2020, there is an international pandemic happening and you're about to start college. This exciting and nerve wracking experience just became a bit more stressful, and for some anxiety provoking.
While I can't change any of that, I can help by sharing my experiences, tips & tricks. So let's dive right in...
XOX, Sophie Paige WOW! What a crazy 10 days it has been. I am still having a hard time wrapping my mind around everything that is going on and has gone on in the last 8 days. With about 48 hours notice I had to pack up, what felt like my entire life, into boxes while taking midterms. Let me just tell you, that was not an easy feat.
For those who don’t know I am a current sophomore at Syracuse University majoring in Nutrition. Just last Monday I was taking my first of three midterms for the week. At the time they were the only thing standing between me and spring break. Then sh** hit the fan and everyone started running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I was not only exhausted from a long two weeks of midterms, but I was under the duress of not knowing whether or not I would be returning to school after spring break. After talking with my family we decided together that I would pack up my entire room. I had to juggle emotions with school work and midterms. 14 boxes, 6 midterms, 3 airports and 2 flights later I am home. Now I am just doing what everyone else seems to be doing, trying to find a new normal. I am spending lots of time with my family, cooking/baking, staying active and finding random projects along the way to do. I am looking for all of the silver linings -- having more time with family, more time to read, to recipe test and to work on “those things i’ll eventually get to”. How are all of you staying busy and passing the time? Any recipe suggestions? Let me know! Stay healthy <3 XOX, Sophie Paige More often than not people ask if it’s hard to maintain a gluten free diet, especially in college, and my answer is that having any type of allergy or eating restriction makes eating anywhere that isn’t home difficult. That’s just inevitable. Being gluten free in college, now that’s a challenge.
Before coming to school I hadn’t really thought about my every meal, actually I didn’t think about it at all which is weird because i’m such a foodie. About 3 weeks into school I realized I was in trouble; gummy bears and popcorn, while delicious and gluten free, is not exactly a healthy diet. Finding gluten free options in the dining hall isn’t difficult if you like baby carrots, dry grilled chicken and gluten-free bread (not toasted) for your every meal. Finding delicious and healthy food is the difficult part. We have a salad bar but in all honesty it’s not my go-to. Let’s just say old lettuce, garbanzo beans, shredded cheese and thick creamy dressing is not my cup of tea. Ordering in is always an option, and a pretty decent one at that but it gets expensive. My savior; Wegmans! Every week I either take a zipcar with my friends or Instacart my groceries and stock up my refrigerator with delicious, healthy and gluten-free food. I have experimented with different products and recipes, making up my own or working off someone else’s. To give you an idea of what i’m working with I have a microwave, magic bullet, panini press and mini waffle iron. For any of you who are gluten-free, hate your dining hall or are just plain sick of your food options stay tuned as I start to share my dorm room recipes!! It's inevitable...there will be discussions about pillows, duvet covers, carpets, and random items you never once thought of before planning your dorm room. What I believe is most important is that your room just has to feel like home. It's not about the wallpaper, which yes I have, or the headboards or color scheme. It's about making your room feel like it's yours, choosing whatever posters will make you smile when you wake up in the morning, pictures of your friends & family and most importantly bringing your childhood stuffed animal. At the end of the day when you're studying, coming home late from a fun night out or just hanging out with your friends, the only thing that matters is that it feels like home, or at least your home away from home.
