I have been getting tons of questions about my trips to the farmer’s market these last few weeks so I thought I would tell you guys all about it. To answer the number one question I’ve gotten. Yes, I feel 100% safe when I go to the farmer’s market. Not only have I been taking precautions but every single person there is taking precautions as well as the organizers of the market.
I go to the Brentwood Farmer’s Market and this past Sunday when I went it was different from all the other times I had been. There were strict rules in place about the do’s and don’ts, what you can or can’t touch and most of all where you can and where you cannot stand. The market was completely reorganized. It is now one way, there is one entrance and one exit and there are only farmers. Before entering the market you have to stand on line. There are pieces of tape on the ground 6ft apart telling you where to stand on the sidewalk to stand in line. Throughout the line there are people who work for the farmers market walking back and fourth (maintaining their distance, of course) reminding you to keep your social distance. When you get to the front of the line there is a farmer’s market organizer who waved you to the three hand washing stations. While you’re at the hand washing station spaced 6ft apart from the two other people also washing their hands there is a set if rules for you to read. The rules include… ⁃Doing your best to only zig-zag through the market keeping the traffic flow one way ⁃Please try to keep your visits to 20 minutes ⁃Understanding that you may not touch any of the produce until you have purchased it — there are farmer’s to pick your produce for you at each stand ⁃To keep your distance from the other people in the market — standing on the indicated “X”s that have been placed on the ground ⁃Keeping shoppers to 2 per household ⁃To please keep children at home ⁃To please make sure you are patient & calm as this is new for everyone. Upon agreeing to the rules you may are offered a pair of plastic gloves and granted entry into the market. Compared to weeks previous the market was empty. They market organizers are strictly monitoring the market and ensuring people move in and out quickly. There are additional hand washing stations thought the market and each farm stand is taking additional precautions as well. Just about every single person I saw was wearing a mask, every farmer was wearing gloves and there was always a designated cashier to make sure no one touching money was touching your food. Supporting our local farmers is more important than ever right now. I feel better going to the farmer’s market than a supermarket because the farmers market is stricter, there are a lot less people touching the produce and the famers are so extra thankful for the business. There are many farm stands I have been going to for quite a while at the farmer’s market and the farmers who work at their stand know me. I trust them to pick the freshest produce, most deciduous berries and persuade me to try something new. Just the human connection alone makes going to the farmers market so much more worth it. Yes, I stood in line for almost an hour to just get into the market and was there at opening time but where am I rushing to?! Nowhere. I stood in line, in the gorgeous weather, sipping my coffee, catching up on the news and chatting with my mama. The 56 minutes I stood in line for blew by, I got the fish produce I wanted and helped a few friends along the way. If you have the ability to help out your local farmers and shop at a farmer’s market near you I highly recommend it. I can guarantee your produce will taste better, you will definitely put a smile on someones face and without a doubt you’ll get some nice time outside. WOW! What a crazy 10 days it has been. I am still having a hard time wrapping my mind around everything that is going on and has gone on in the last 8 days. With about 48 hours notice I had to pack up, what felt like my entire life, into boxes while taking midterms. Let me just tell you, that was not an easy feat.
For those who don’t know I am a current sophomore at Syracuse University majoring in Nutrition. Just last monday I was taking my first of three midterms for the week. At the time they were the only thing standing between me and spring break. Then sh** hit the fan and everyone started running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I was not only exhausted from a long two weeks of midterms, but I was under the duress of not knowing whether or not I would be returning to school after spring break. After talking with my family we decided together that I would pack up my entire room. I had to juggle emotions with school work and midterms. 14 boxes, 6 midterms, 3 airports and 2 flights later I am home. Now I am just doing what everyone else seems to be doing, trying to find a new normal. I am spending lots of time with my family, cooking/baking, staying active and finding random projects along the way to do. I am looking for all of the silver linings -- having more time with family, more time to read, to recipe test and to work on “those things i’ll eventually get to”. How are all of you staying busy and passing the time? Any recipe suggestions? Let me know! Stay healthy <3 XOX, Sophie Paige Everyone has someone they look up to. When it comes to blogging and fashion I always go to Arielle Charnas, the beauty and brains behind Something Navy.
First of all let me just say meeting Arielle today was life changing! I’ve been following Something Navy for years now and meeting her was a dream come true. Arielle was as sweet as could be and genuinely interested in what I had to say. It turns out we have a lot in common! Arielle, thank you for taking time to talk to me. I wish you, Brandon and Ruby Lou happy holidays as well as a happy and healthy new year!! XOX, Sophie Paige One compliment I often receive is that I’m always prepared. It’s rare that I am in a situation where I need something and don’t have it. So I thought I would share what I always keep in my bag to help all of you!
There are two categories of things I keep in my bag: the universal essentials (phone, wallet & keys) and then there are my essentials (chapstick, hand cream etc.). Here is a full list of my essentials: 1. Chapstick & Lipstick For me it’s absolutely necessary to have chapstick and lipstick. I believe they do different jobs. Chapstick keeps my lips moisturized while llipstick adds a little color. If you’re a lipgloss kinda person feel free to swap that lipstick out for a gloss. 2. Hand Cream Oh. My. Gosh. Dry hands are the absolute worst! Whether it’s the middle of summer or the middle of winter I always keep hand cream with me. I am an avid hand-washer and because of this my hands dry out easily, especially when the temperature drops. 3. Jao Hand Spray This may be the most important thing to keep on hand. If I could only have one thing with me, it would be Jao Hand Spray. It can be used as hand sanitizer, to dry out pimples and if you’re really in a bind deodorant. What could be more helpful?! Plus...it smells SOOO clean and yummy!! 3. Advil & Tylenol While some of my friends make fun of me and call me a traveling pharmacy they’re always thankful. I keep tylenol and advil on hand, as well as a few other things. You never know when a headache or cramp will come about so keep it with you at all times. 4. Pens You’re probably wondering why I keep a pen or two in my bag. Here’s why...you’ll need one when you least expect it. Whether it’s to jot down a phone number or fill out a form, you will automatically seem a lot more organized. It won’t take up much spaces and weighs nothing...so just trust me on this one. 5. Tissues We’ve all been in the situation when you have to go to the bathroom so badly you just run into the first empty stall and forget to check the toilet paper. It may be one of the worst relizations ever, but if you have tissues in your bag you’re not out of luck. Maybe you’ll use it for your nose or save yourself the next time you’re in a bathroom with no toilet paper. 6. Mints Bad breath is a no! I always keep mints in my bag to stay minty fresh. 7. Hair Ties, Bobby Pins & Clips Anyone with long hair knows what it’s like to be stuck without a hair tie, especially on a hot day. I always keep a few in my bag as well as bobby pins and a clip or two. You never know when you’re day out will transition into an impromptu night out and need a new hairstyle ASAP! So, next time you’re out and someone asks for a pen, tissue or advil you’ll be their go-to! XOX, Sophie Paige |
